Artist Statement:
As a multipassionate artist, educator, and creative, my muse is curiosity. Exploring, gathering, and implementing ideas drawn from my life as a portfolioist is what fuels my creative life, as evidenced by my observation – and subsequent collection - of icebergs.
In Submerged, I explore the complexity of icebergs, the majestic and magical glacial masses of ice. My curiosity leads me to dig beneath the surface to see what lies beyond the “tip of the iceberg”.
My muse reminds me to continue discovering the beauty of people, places, and ideas underneath the surface. Through Open Studio, Erica Ross’ online community for makers and creators, my muse was continuously fed by the creative inspiration of the collective and I am excited to showcase my Submerged series in the Exhibition.
For this series, I was inspired to use found wood as the basis for my paper and ink collages. As a collage artist, I feel that layering and overlapping assorted papers into a form (in this case icebergs), creates a visual representation of our lives. What we see and express is often not the full story – just as the part of the iceberg above the surface represents only a small portion of the whole. What might we uncover if we were to see that 90% of an iceberg is submerged?
In our own lives, much of who lies beneath the surface as well, whether that is our motivations, fears, challenges, and lived histories. Just as these collages are purposeful collections of paper and ink shaped into icebergs, our lives can be shaped by what lies above and below the surface.
Thank you, Erica and Open Studio, for the opportunity to create art inspired by my muse!
